Tasting Notes & Story
The nose is effusive with woodsmoke, floral, orchard fruit, citrus oil, and bread notes. The palate is energetic and nuanced, though without the density of a blanc de noirs. Here, overt minerality is the core. Outward from this radiates a bright sense of fruit, acidity, succulence, and texture. It seems refined and playful at the same time. The finish is long, complex, invigorating, and pure.

I always get excited when I am introduced to a new Champagne producer…like this one! We (Ryan, Nick, Joey C. and Joe Consul) got a chance to taste this wine a few weeks ago. As I said, I had not ever heard of this producer, but was very impressed with the wine. How is it these tiny, yet special producers have not been discovered already?? Who cares, I guess. Better late than never, right? Here is a producer with the 9th generation at the helm. Nineth?? Wow! These are pure expressions of Verzy Grand Cru, one of the most interesting and diverse terroirs in the Montagne de Reims. Sébastien Mouzon is producing certified organic wines and practicing biodynamic viticulture. He is one of the so-called “third wave” of grower-producers—marking those producers of a new generation, who are pushing the boundaries of what’s been done in this region, similar to Cédric Moussé, Benoit Dehu, and Aurelien Suenen. Sébastien’s interpretation of Verzy is refined but also unadorned and without pretense. They are delicious wines, thoughtful, restrained, mineral, and incisive; if you’re looking for creaminess you won’t find it here. This is a laser-focused, pure, dry wine. Oysters anyone?? ~Mike Guerra
