2021 Birichino Vin Gris Rosé
70% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, 9% Cinsault, 5% Carignane, and 4% Vermentino.
This includes Cinsault from the 127 year-old Bechthold Vineyard in Lodi, Mourvèdre from a limestone bench in gloriously remote Topo Valley (and from a pair of recently grafted one-acre blocks within the Besson Grenache) and a touch of Rolle (Vermentino). Almost entirely the product of direct press, the wine is fermented to dryness in one long, sequential native co-fermentation in stainless. Sharply focused nose displays scents of redcurrant, strawberry and orange zest lifted by a suave floral topnote. Dry and racy on the palate, offering bitter red berry skin flavors and a hint of honeysuckle. Fleshes out on the finish, which hangs on with very good floral tenacity. Excellent purity and elegance.
