2021 Skegro ‘Krs Orange’ Zilavka

What a fun, delicious, totally obscure wine....we LOVE it! Bariša Škegro is the baby-faced proprietor of Vinarija Škegro, a family winery based near Medugorje (Herzegovina). Since 2015, he’s made a wine named “Krš Orange” – a macerated Žilavka (that’s the grape), that is farmed organically and hand-harvested - made as a homage to his grandfather, also named Bariša. That’s grandad on the label, by the way. Enticing aromas of fresh herbs, chamomile and hay combine with intense notes of apricot and orange peel. There’s fruit, amazing texture and huge gluggability, with a light 12.5% alcohol. It is as natural as can be, spontaneously fermented with 15 days of skin contact, aged in used barrels and then bottled unfiltered & unfined.and unsulphured. We salute Škegro for going the whole hog and not just making a “pretend” orange wine!
