2019 Weingut Niklas Pinot Bianco
Alto Adige, Italy
This wine from South Tyrol is 100% Pinot Bianco, coming from vineyards aged 20-35 years located near Lake Caldaro at an altitude of 1500 feet. Short maceration on the skins; fermentation at under 18 °C in stainless steel tanks followed by several months aging on the lees.
Tasting Notes
The altitude of these vineyards gives the wines an excellent backbone of acidity, incredible wet stone minerality and reductive matchstick. White nectarine, pear, white peach, and a creamy texture that is slowly peeled back to unveil crisp acidity and crunchy green fruits.
About Weingut Niklas
Dieter Sölva is a young winemaker from the tiny village of St. Nikolaus, high up on the west side of a majestic valley that leads north through the Dolomites. Dieter learned the business from his father, Josef, the founder of the Niklas winery, whom he succeeded. Dieter’s son Michael is already adding his unique handwriting to the family business – whose wines are now being marketed throughout the world. All of his white wines are vinified in stainless-steel with no malolactic fermentation and no oak, allowing the wine to show the true flavors of the earth. It is very typical of the region that the wines are impeccably clean (Dieter is a graduate of the famous enology school at San Michele, as was his father before him). The vineyards cover 5.5 hectares of vines in the locations Barleit, Galgenwiese, Kardatsch, Lavardi, Muttergarten, Putznai, Salt and Vial. They are planted with the white wine varieties Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Kerner as well as the red wine varieties Vernatsch, Lagrein, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine-growing is consistently carried out in close contact with nature. Around 50,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. About 25% are exported to Germany, England, the Netherlands, USA and Japan.
