2019 Two Shepherds Vermentino 'Windmill Vineyard'
Yolo County, California
This is Two Shepherd’s 4th release of Vermentino (also known as Rolle in Southern France.) William purchases the Vermentino grapes from Windmill Vineyards, which are farmed organically and planted to Bordeaux and Rhône varieties. The gravelly, alluvial soil is perfect for the combination of grapes and fruit trees farmed on the rolling hills of this property located in California’s Dunnigan Hills AVA. This 11 barrel, 275 case lot was fermented and aged in 50% stainless steel, and 50% neutral barrel for 6 months. There are no additions to this wine except for a small amount of sulfur and it was bottled without fining or filtration. It’s just wine!
Pale yellow in the glass with generous aromas of melon, wet stone and hints of honeysuckle. Citrusy flavors lead along with melon, stone fruit and gravelly minerality and are supported by bright acidity.
About Two Shepherds
William Allen began making wine in his garage, inspired by Rhone varietals and blends. Over the years, be conitnue to expand and experiment with making small lots from unique vineyard sites throughout Northern California, until eventually earning the nickname, ‘insane master of small lots’. While Two Shepherd’s total production is small (~2,000 cases per year) they produce a wide range of wines - about 15 different wines each vintage. All the wines are fermented with native yeast, aged on the lees in neutral barrels, minimally racked with no fining, filtration, or additions other than a small amount of sulfur. They focus on uncommon varietals, cool climate or old vine plantings, often from the only few acres in California
