2019 Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz
South Australia
A deep, dense cherry-black in color—dark and brooding. Primary aromas of blackberry fruits and black olive tapenade segue to black jelly bean and soot. It is reminiscent of the burnt crystallized crust of a freshly (over) baked fruitcake. Caramelized black fig, quince and juniper add to the evocative mix.
There’s an enlivening acidity that drives the palate with malleable tannins supporting a chewy, appetizing mouthfeel. Notes of bitter chocolate, pipe tobacco and a mass of dark-berried fruits throughout.
93 points, Wine Spectator. "Ripe blackberry, blueberry and framboise flavors are plump and balanced, with notes of rosemary, sage, black walnut liqueur, Dutch cocoa powder and dried violet, followed by wonderfully velvety tannins on the finish."
93 points, Vinous. "Deep, bright-rimmed ruby. Smoke-tinged cherry liqueur, cassis and licorice scents, along with hints of cured tobacco and mocha. Gently sweet and lush on the palate, offering concentrated dark fruit, floral pastille and roasted coffee flavors that are sharpened by a peppery nuance. The long, supple finish echoes the dark berry note and is framed by velvety, even tannins. Made in all used American oak. Best After 2026."
