2020 Domaine du Couron Côtes du Rhône Viognier
One of the best reasonably-priced Viogniers we've come across in a LONG time! It has all the best qualitites of Viognier (beguiling aromatics, fleshy texture, easy-drinking) without being too "perfumy" or over-the-top.
100% Viognier from a 35 year old vineyard in the village of Saint Marcel d'Ardeche, about 45 miles northwest of Avignon. The soils are limestone over granite. Vinified with the maceration pelliculaire (long skin contact) method and only partial malolactic fermentation. Only 680 cases were imported to the United States.
Tasting Notes: Mineral-tinged white peach, pear, orange zest and pungent flowers on the perfumed nose. Juicy and light on its feet, offering focused orchard and pit fruit flavors that are given a spicy edge by a touch of ginger. Finishes long and precise, with the mineral note repeating.
Winery Notes: This family-run estate lies in the tiny hamlet of Saint Marcel d’Ardeche. Vestiges of a Roman outpost have been found throughout the vineyards, as wine has been grown here since antiquity. Parcels are terraced at Couron, with one higher in elevation than the next. Balance and great finesse are the hallmarks at Domain de Couron. Jean-Luc carries the mantle, a descendant of nine generations of wine growers. Using sustainable farming techniques, Jean-Luc and Marie-Lise Dorthe craft, with loving hands, wines on land once cultivated by the Romans.
