2018 S.C. Pannell Grenache 'Old McDonald Vineyard'
McLaren Vale, Australia
Grapes from the 76-year-old bush vine Old McDonald vineyard on Blewitt Springs’ white sandy soils were fermented with 20% whole clusters, lending a Negroni aromatised herb and orange peel edge to its pithy pomegranate, taut red cherry and juicier raspberry and watermelon fruit. Plentiful spice, musky sandalwood and a raft of striated, sandpapery tannins lend piquancy and energy. Lovely structure and length. Detailed, complex yet ethereal. Aged nine months in a 4500L, eight-year-old French-oak vat; bottled unfiltered. Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. They’re built around brightness of fruit and savory tannin structure.
