2018 Pisoni Estate Chardonnay
Santa Lucia Highlands, California
Only four barrels (100 cases) were made of this exceedingly rare and hard to attain Chardonnay from the royal family of Santa Lucia Highlands winegrowing and the crown jewel of high elevation vineyard sites in the area. The 2018 vintage was truly something special throughout California, but especially in the SLH. In the vineyards, Mark Pisoni seeks low yields and sustainable farming (ask him about his insectory!), while his brother Jeff uses natural fermentation and minimalist winemaking to capture the essence of this site. Medium bodied but quite rich in the mouth, with all kinds of citrus fruit, white flowers and a rocky mineral streak, all butressed by high but perfectly balanced acidity. Drink over the next 15 years.

"One of the best kept secrets in California Chardonnay comes from the Pisoni Family and their estate vineyard in the southern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Brought up in around 60% new French oak, the 2018 offers a lighter gold hue as well as a stunning bouquet of caramelized citrus, Meyer lemons, white flowers, and a liquid rock-like minerality that’s rare to find in whites from California. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with integrated acidity and flawless balance, I’d put this up against any white out there. It shows the more supple style of the vintage, yet I suspect it will still evolve for 10-15 years."
