2018 Palazzo Vecchio Rosso di Montepulciano 'Dogana' DOC
"Pours a dark ruby red color turning to garnet at the rim. I didn't decant, and the wine really started to open up after about 15-20 minutes in the glass. I'm getting aromas of bright red spiced cherry, warm earth, Mediterranean herbs and fresh mint. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied and velvety smooth- the tannins have softened but are still present. Flavors mimic the nose, and it finishes long, smooth and slightly spicy. Really elegant and in a prime drinking window right now." ~Ryan Smith, Enoteca Direct
Made of mostly Sangiovese with about 10% each Canaiolo and Mammolo, this wine sees eight months in French oak. Palazzo Vecchio sits atop a shallow hill in southern Tuscany, in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG . It’s surrounded by vineyards neatly bisected by five dirt roads. Today the estate is run by Maria Louisa Sbernadori on behalf of her family. Her grandfather bought the property in 1950, primarily as a shooting estate. Maria Louisa is making pure, clean expressions of Vino Nobile, wines at the same time elegant and deeply rooted in the soil.
