2018 Olga Raffault Chinon 'Les Barnabés'
Loire Valley, France
Domaine Olga Raffalult is an iconic house in the Chinon region that has developed a cult status for their impeccable and age-worthy Cabernet Franc wines. The Domain is currently run by her granddaughter Sylvie and her husband Eric de la Vigerie. The winemaking is most traditional: hand-picked grapes are fermented in stainless steel, and wines are aged in larger, neutral oak and sometimes chestnut - a traditional wood barrel in the region.
Les Barnabés comes from organically-farmed 35-year old vines on an alluvial site near the Loire river. The sandy soils produce a very approachable Cabernet Franc, fresh and fruit forward, with notes of dark berries, ripe cherry, violets, and juniper. Fell free to pop and pour this now, but it has the provenance to age for 5-10 years with ease.
