2018 Martinelli 'Zio Tony Ranch' Pinot Noir
Russian River Valley, California
The Martinelli family has been growing grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1887. These handcrafted wines are unfined, unfiltered - and typcally very hard to come by! A silver lining from the pandemic, the distributor was given a few cases…AND we were able to snag a couple. Woo-hoo! If you are a fan of ‘Colossal California Reds,’ then I think you should know this historic Sonoma-based winery and its wines. Martinelli is ‘OG’ Colossal Red. One of their former winemakers may be someone you’ve heard of…Helen Turley?? Yeah, she was their winemaker from 1992-2010. At one point, Turley simultaneously made wines for Colgin, Bryant, Turley, Martinelli, Pahlmeyer, Green & Red, Harrison, La Jota, Landmark and Canepa, as well her and husband John Wetlaufer’s own label, Marcassin. Martinelli has been quietly a pseudo ‘Cult-winery’ for those in the know and their Pinots, Chard and Zins have quite a following. ~Mike Guerra
100% Pinot Noir from Zio Tony Ranch. Grapes we de-stemmed, cold settled for 5 days. Primary fermentation on skins lasted 14 days. Malolactic fermentation was completed in barrel. Wine was aged on fine lees for 10 months in French Oak, 50% new.
97 points, Vinous Media. "Upon opening there are intriguing aromas of blueberry, hibiscus tea, and a pinch of white pepper on the nose. On the palate a sweet entry leads to a balance of acidity. As the wine unfolds refreshing flavors of Bing cherry and Santa Rosa plum linger through the finish."
