2019 Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso 'a Rina
Giuseppe Russo is a quiet thoughtful man, formerly a pianist. Since 2005 he has been organically farming his family's old vineyards, many of the vines around 100 years of age, and he is restoring the old cellar under his house. He has 15 hectares of vines on the North side of Etna around the town of Passopisciaro. The majority of Russo’s grapes goes toward the making his entry-level Etna Rosso, called a’ Rina. While a’ Rina is mostly from his younger vines, there is fruit from vines dating back over 100 years included in the blend. 94% Nerello Mascalese, 6% Nerello Cappuccio, undergo 15 days maceration and controlled low temperature fermentation in steel and plastic tanks with indigenous yeasts. The wine ages 16 months in 2,500L barrel, cement and used barrique. For Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo lovers, Nerello Mascalese is an exciting find, making aromatic wines that have delicacy and structure. From vineyards planted on ancient lava flows, this red is juicy, complex, and delicious. Pair it with pasta dishes, seafood, and grilled light meats.
