2019 Domaine Verret Irancy Rouge
Affordable Burgundy? Not an oxymoron if you know where to look. To know where to look you need to adopt a wider lens to seek quality outside of the region’s coveted Côte d’Or. At Burgundy's northern boundary, just a twenty-minute drive southwest of Chablis is the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux, where our most recent direct-import out of Burgundy, Domaine Verret, owns 98 acres of well-placed vines, covering 4 different appellations. Domaine Verret has been owned by the same family for over 250 years! Due south of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux is the appellation of Irancy, where the Verret family owns a large holding of Pinot Noir vines. Their Irancy is a staff favorite. Light-bodied and redolent with Morello cherry fruit, it is pleasing and feisty and just when you think it might detour towards “rustic”, the jammy fruit veers headlong into delicious. This red sees no oak, and doesn't mind a slight chill if the weather warrants.
