2019 Domaine Faury Saint-Joseph Rouge
Domaine Faury is one of the region’s most artisanal producers. Since 2006, Lionel has taken over the reins at Domaine Faury from his father Philippe, though father and son still work side by side. Pigeage, the punching of the cap, is not carried out with tools, but gently by foot – not just poetic but also pragmatic. Unfined and only lightly filtered before bottling, these wines are loaded with classic flavors and show a remarkable rustic elegance. 100% Syrah from 6.4 hectares of vines that were planted between 1976 and 2007. Hand harvested. 60 to 70% of grapes are de-stemmed. Aged for 12 months in foudres (24 – 35 hl), demi-muids (600-L), barrels (228-L); only 10% new oak is used in the rotation of barrels. This dark beauty offers a liveliness and freshness that one does not often find in wines from the northern Rhône. If you like your Saint Joseph smooth as silk and imbued with violets, this one’s for you. Assertive black/blue fruit, olive paste and floral aromas are complemented by peppery spice and mineral notes that emerge with aeration. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering sweet boysenberry, cassis and fruitcake flavors sharpened by a vein of juicy acidity.
