2018 Domaine Faury Saint-Joseph "Vielles Vignes"
Domaine Faury is one of the region’s most artisanal producers. Since 2006, Lionel has taken over the reins at Domaine Faury from his father Philippe, though father and son still work side by side. Pigeage, the punching of the cap, is not carried out with tools, but gently by foot – not just poetic but also pragmatic. Unfined and only lightly filtered before bottling, these wines are loaded with classic flavors and show a remarkable rustic elegance. 100% Syrah from vines that range in age from 44-70 years old. Hand harvested. 70 to 80% of grapes are de-stemmed. Aged for 15 months in oak demi-muids (600-L) and barrels (220-L). Assertive black/blue fruit, olive paste and floral aromas are complemented by peppery spice and mineral notes that emerge with aeration. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering sweet boysenberry, cassis and fruitcake flavors sharpened by a vein of juicy acidity. A smoky mineral nuance appears on the impressively long, blue-fruit-dominated finish, where well-knit tannins provide shape and closing grip.
