2018 Château Grand-Jauga Sauternes
Château Grand Jauga is in the center of Haut-Bergeron in the most prestigious cru of the Sauternes area, a locale that features sand and gravel, with a sub-strata of clay and limestone. The estate traces back 6 generations to one of the pioneers of the Sauternes region, the Lamothe family. About 1,000 cases per year are produced from 90% Semillon, 5% Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% Muscadelle du Bordelais grapes. The average age of the vines is 55 years. The grape growing is traditional, with all organic amendments, and de-leafing (for greater sun exposure to the grapes) at the end of August. The grapes are manually harvested in 6-7 successive “tris” (pickings or passes through the vineyard) and fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged for 12 months in small oak barrels.
Rich and unctuous, this wine has a sweet and haunting bouquet of honey, apricots, fruit preserves, vanilla, and caramel.
