2017 Platinetti Guido Ghemme 'Vigna Ronco al Maso'
Alto Piemonte, Italy
Ghemme is one of the constellation of largely forgotten vineyards dotting the hills north of Barolo and Barbaresco - the region called “Alto Piemonte.”
This wine comes from a tiny 1.7 acre plot on a steep, south-facing, slope called Ronco Al Maso. It’s 100% Nebbiolo aged for three years in large, old, oak casks and then more aging in bottle before release. Give it a short decant - perhaps 30 minutes - and you’ll be blown away by the lovely perfume of rose petal, cherry, burnt orange peel, spice and subtle leather. Ripe and nicely fruit-filled (cherry, ripe strawberry) on the palate, there’s fantastic complexity to the accents of licorice, dried rose petal, tobacco, leather and more. The tannins are ripe and fine and acidity fresh and bright.
