2017 Côtière 'Derive' Red Blend

2017 Côtière 'Derive' Red Blend
California

Now, I admit that I was not familiar with this label until a few years ago when I was introduced to it. In fact, the Westside Cabernet Franc in the Riserva Red Club back in November of 2019 and the Petite Verdot in the Colossal Red in December of 2020 is like a “second label” of this winemaker, mainly for his Bordeaux blends. As much as I was impressed with THOSE wines, Kevin Law, the man behind these wines, is more known for his work with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. I’ve now tasted a few different Chard and Pinots from this talented guy, and they are IMPRESSIVE! They have actually been reviewed by Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media and he’s also a big fan, giving most of the wines scores in the mid-nineties. Honestly, his are some of the most impressive wines at their price points that I have come across in some time. What I find really impressive, aside from the vineyard sourcing and winemaking, is that this guy seems equally adept with Burgundian varietals (Chard & Pinot) AND Bordeaux varietals (Cab, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot…). And here’s further proof! He also makes great Rhone varietals (Syrah, blends)! OMG, the guy’s a genius!  No wonder he’s made the ranks of Mikey’s “Man Crush” producers! ~Mike Guerra, Advanced Sommelier, Enoteca Direct

“Derive” is French for a spontaneous journey led by the terrain and landscape. 34% McKenzie-Mueller Merlot, 16% Lewelling Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon both from Napa Valley, with 40% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot from the Curtis Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley. Warm fall days and cool nights resulted in a later harvest with significant hang time. 50% new oak, unfined, unfiltered. 140 cases.

Vibrant and deeply pitched, this distinctive Bordeaux blend has so much to offer. Super-expressive, ripe, lush. Loaded with dark ripe fruit, mocha, and spice. Layered and complex. Very impressive and enjoyable.

93 points, Antonio Galloni's Vinous. "The 2017 Dérive Red Blend is an unusual blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot that incorporates fruit from both Napa Valley and Santa Ynez Valley. Exotic and flamboyant to the core, Dérive reflects the warmth of the year with its exotic fruit and flamboyant personality. Macerated cherry, licorice, spice and chocolate give this sensual red so much immediacy and pure appeal.”

“Once again, I was deeply impressed with Kevin Law’s wines. Law has a way of coaxing striking richness from his sites in a style that is both personal and unique within Santa Barbara. The wines are deep and textured, but never overdone. Best of all, the Côtière offer tremendous value.” – Antonio Galloni
