2017 Big Basin Roussane 'Homestead Block'
Santa Cruz Mountains, California
100% Roussanne. They whole cluster pressed, settled briefly in tank, and then racked to barrel and a 600 liter clay Amphorae where they ferment slowly at lower temperatures. They then racked into a stainless tank at twelve months where the wine spent an additional seven months. This added step produced a Roussanne with more energy and freshness and fantastic mid palate density.
Classic crushed white flowers, white peach, hint creme brûlée, and keefer lime. Powerful on palate with a mineral laden mid palate on entry, that fades into layers of crushed flowers, stone fruit and faint citrus. This is a decidedly more mineral driven Roussanne that is dense, yet through its freshness avoids being flabby or too unctuous.
Given that this is a decidedly more mineral driven Roussanne makes it a more versatile wine to pair with a variety of foods including poultry, crab, other richer seafood dishes and pasta with cream sauces.
