2016 Tsiakkas Vamvakada
Made from Cyprus’s most important indigenous red-wine grape, this is dark and dense, its tannic, plummy flavors wrapped in a soothing coat of vanilla-scented oak. It’s impressively youthful for a 2016, still almost grapey in the freshness of its fruit, suggesting that this will benefit from another few years in the cellar to integrate. The 2016 Vamvakada is an unusual monovarietal, aged for 13 months in 20% new oak (mostly French) and the rest in barrels ranging up to five years old. All the vines are organic pre-Phylloxera, seven years in age.
