2016 Glaetzer 'Amon-Ra' Shiraz
Barossa Valley, Australia
The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The clan includes Colin, his oenology-trained wife Judith, twin brother/winemaker John, and five winemakers among the couple’s three sons and their wives. Young Glaetzer has implemented many changes at the winery, particularly with regard to harvesting upon physiological ripeness vs. analysis, longer skin contact and the use of the highest possible quality oak barrels. This is 100% Shiraz from very old vines (50-130 years). Deep, dense, and rich, with jammy, raisiny, plummy fruit and lots of spice and chocolate notes. Will continue to improve and evolve over the next decade at least.
95 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
"Dramatic, intense and powerful, the 2016 Amon Ra Shiraz recalls the 2004 in its youth, crammed with layers of fruit, complex, savory elements and rich, velvety tannins. It's full-bodied, characterized by notes of grilled meat, espresso, black olive, cassis, vanilla, baking spices and an undercurrent of loamy earth. Yes, it's unapologetically big and bold, the product of a warm, sunny climate and ripe grapes, but it does show a sense of decorum, restraint and elegance on the long finish."
