2016 Ferrari Perlé Brut
Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy
I LOVE the Ferrari wines. They have a special place in my heart. I’ve featured several of them over the years – the regular Brut, the Rosé, and, one of my personal favorites, the 2006 Perlé Nero a few years back. That wine was “singin’!” I remember taking a bottle down to Carmel to have with my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday dinner at La Balena…it was AWESOME! So, it didn’t take much thought or consideration to include THIS wine in the club when I found out some was still available…Okay, so full disclosure here: I got some for ME and thought that it would be a great club wine too…so you all get the benefit of my obsession with this top-notch producer of sparkling wine. You’re welcome. Here you’ve got a Blanc de Blancs, made from 100% Chardonnay, that was aged at least 5 years on the lees (that’s on par with what the top Champagne houses do with their vintage bottlings)…it’s elegant, it’s layered, it’s developed…it’s delicious! And 6 bottles are chilling in my wine fridge! ~Mike Guerra, Enoteca Direct
100% Chardonnay from estate vineyards. Ferrari Perlé is made using the traditional metodo classico. After a hand harvest in September, the wine undergoes a gentle pressing and first fermentation in tanks. The wine is bottled and a second fermentation occurs with selected yeasts. At least 5 years on the yeasts, selected from our own strains.
Pale golden highlights adorn its straw yellow color. The perlage is extremely fine and persistent. Aromatic richness of extraordinary expressiveness: the scene is dominated by hints of apples and citrus fruits, accompanied by tones of white peach, almond blossom and toast-like notes. Elegant and harmonious, with the unmistakable fruity, aromatic sensations that are typical of Chardonnay. These are followed by a slightly almondy finish of great persistence, the result of long ageing on the yeasts.
