2017 Palazzo Vecchio Vino Nobile di Montepulciano “Maestro

2017 Palazzo Vecchio Vino Nobile di Montepulciano “Maestro" DOCG
Tuscany, Italy

An extraordinary value for Sangiovese from the town of Montepulciano, the slightly less famous neighbor of Montalcino. 85% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese), 10% Canaiolo Nero and 5% Mammolo, from older vines closer to the house at higher elevation. Fermented in temp-controlled stainless steel, with 24 months neutral French oak and 6 months minimum in bottle. In its PRIME and drinking beautifully but will hold for the next 10-15 years easily! Enticing floral, woodland berry, new leather and tilled soil aromas come together in this stunning red. Vibrant and elegant, the linear palate delivers wild cherry, red raspberry, cinnamon and clove notes, framed by firm, refined tannins and vibrant acidity. The youthful tension is pleasant, but give it time to develop even more complexity.

Palazzo Vecchio sits atop a shallow hill in southern Tuscany, in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG . It’s surrounded by vineyards neatly bisected by five dirt roads. Today the estate is run by Maria Louisa Sbernadori on behalf of her family. Her grandfather bought the property in 1950, primarily as a shooting estate. Maria Louisa is making pure, clean expressions of Vino Nobile, wines at the same time elegant and deeply rooted in the soil.

92 points, Wine Enthusiast. "Fragrant purple-flower, baking-spice and ripe plum aromas mingle with scents of wild herb and forest floor. On the taut linear palate, fine-grained tannins support offering dried black cherry, licorice and a hint of tobacco."
