2015 Mario Bazán Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley, California
100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vineyards in Atlas Peak and Coombsville. Aged in 100% French oak (60% new) for 20 months.
Black garnet color. Aromas of black cassis, toasted coconut, espresso beans, bell pepper, and coriander seed with a round, vibrant, fruity light to medium body and a grateful, complex, long plum tart, cola, vanilla custard, and toasty waffles finish with moderate oak flavor. A firm and table-friendly Napa cabernet with style and grace.
The Bazan’s are humble, hard working, genuine people. Mario’s happy place is working and farming the vineyards and they are a great team who produce small production, well structured cabernet wines.
While at Mondavi, Mario was ultimately in charge of such iconic vineyards as Opus One and To-Kalon where he was part of the very first Napa experiments in tight meter-by-meter spacing which is now the standard for ultra premium Cabernet growing in Napa. He started his own Vineyard Management Company in 1998 with clients including Rudd, Hartwell, Turnbull and Kenzo, and works with growers up Valley as well as in Coombsville and Soda Canyon. The Mario Bazan Winery was established in 2005. The roots of Mario Bazan Cellars go back to 1973 when Mario immigrated to the Napa Valley from his native Oaxaca, Mexico. When Mario arrived in the Napa Valley, he was immediately charmed by its beauty and energized by the vigorous wine growing atmosphere he observed. He continued to hone his skills over the next four decades as he advanced step-by-step from a general laborer to grape grower. Today, Mario and his wife Gloria have their own estate vineyard and highly regarded management company farming several hundred acres throughout Napa and Sonoma Valleys.
