2015 Collemattoni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 'Vigna Fontelontano'
Tuscany, Italy
This is Collemattoni's top wine, only made in great vintages. It's 100% organic Sangiovese from a single, tiny vineyard on the Collemattoni estate. The wine sees 36 months in French oak, then another 18 months in bottle before release. It's got a bold, dark and sexy (but not overdone) nose of dark fruit, mint and spice with big ripe tannins and a long, fresh, polished finish. The oak is really well integrated already. It will be better in coming years but is already delicious.
Fontelontano Vineyard is located between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Collemattoni at 380 meters above the sea level. The name is linked to the presence of water source where in the old times people use to get their water for their homes. The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is produced from this vineyard only in the best vintages. Fontelontano vineyard dates back to 1984 and is the oldest vineyard at Collemattoni.
From the very beginning, it was important to Marcello Bucci to work with respect for nature and the environment in his vineyards, which are among the most spectacular in Brunello. Collemattoni has been organically certified since 2012 and thanks to a biomass heating system and solar panels, 80% of the electricity required can be sustainably produced by the winery itself.
96 points, James Suckling. "Dried berry and cherry with flower and walnut undertones. Some stones and dry earth. Full-bodied with a chewy, intense palate, showing wonderful structure and depth. A serious 2015 Brunello. Drink after 2023."
96 points, WinesCritic.com "The primary profile of this young Riserva is fragrant and dynamic, rich in raspberries, blackcurrants, pomegranate and lemon flowers. In the background citronella alternates its presence with wild thyme and together they describe the secondary profile. Medium to full bodied, juicy and loveable showing an impressive sweetness in the centre palate and a long, elegant finale that immediately bewitches. A masterpiece in Montalcino in a splendid record vintage. Better from 2021."
