2015 Collemattoni Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 1.5L Magnum
Tuscany, Italy
2015 was a great vintage in Montalcino- the wines are full of ripe fruit with good structure due to a warm but not hot summer and no weather issues. This wine is rich and structured but so elegant at the same time- tons of smokey, dusty dark red fruit, minerals, and a savory, gamey quality. Its mouthfilling, with big, ripe tannins playing against fresh acidity on the long finish.
100% organic Sangiovese Grosso. Made from Sangiovese grown in vineyards located in all four of the major quadrants of the Montalcino production zone, which allows owner Adon Bucci to make a highly balanced wine. Once picked and gently pressed, the juice undergoes fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks for 30 days; the wine then ages in Slovenian oaks casks for thirty months and ages in bottle for four months before release.
This is a tiny seven hectare estate in San Angelo in Colle, on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino. Marcello Bucci, who studied oenology under Signora Fuligni (Roberto Fuligni's aunt), is making wonderfully good wines, which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper than wines from the northern parts of the zone. Collemattoni is one of the best value wines of the region. ~Mike Guerra, Enoteca Direct
95 points, Vinous Media. "Good full red. Perfumed aromas of red cherry, kirsch, mocha and herbs on the inviting nose. Despite its size, this is graceful and impeccably built, with very precise flavors of red plum, blueberry, milk chocolate and minerals that expand and broaden on the long, seductive finish. Outstanding Brunello that offers both size and refinement. In my opinion, Collemattoni is a very underrated, off the radar Brunello estate but its wines deserve to be better known."
