2014 Clos Puy Arnaud Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
Clos Puy Arnaud has a history of winemaking dating back to the 1800's, but its purchase by Thierry Valette in 2000 marked a definitive shift for the winery that put it on the map. The name Valette might sound familiar to you, Thierry used to be joint owner of the famous Chateau Pavie before he sold it in the early 2000's, so making high quality, first growth Bordeaux was already second nature. Thierry also envisioned something different for his new winery, so he took the estate 100% certified biodynamic in 2008. This a powerful wine that combines freshness and purity of ripe berries with the silky texture of the subtle oak. It's the first wine of the estate and goes through the longest oak ageing - 7 months in barriques, 25% of which are new. It's 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The total production is very boutique - just 29 000 bottles were made.
92 points, Antonio Galloni's Vinous. "The 2014 Clos Puy Arnaud is terrific. Sweet red cherry, wild flowers, mint and white pepper give the wine a level of aromatic dimension that it did not show when it was in barrel. Silky, perfumed and exceptionally polished, the 2014 is simply impeccable today. A rush of dark red cherry and pomegranate fruit adds the closing shades of nuance in this striking, understated red. Clos Puy Arnaud is one of the sleepers of the vintage. The blend is 60 % Merlot, 35 % Cabernet Franc and 5 % Cabernet Sauvignon."
