2012 Collemattoni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 'Vigna Fontelontano'
2012 was a phenomenal vintage in Tuscany- the wines show ripe but fresh fruit, with enough structure for the long haul. This is Collemattoni's top wine, only made in great vintages. It's 100% organic Sangiovese from a single, tiny vineyard on the Collemattoni estate. The wine sees 36 months in French oak, then another 18 months in bottle before release. It's got a bold, dark and sexy (but not overdone) nose of dark fruit, mint and spice with big ripe tannins and a long, fresh, polished finish. The oak is really well integrated already. It will be better in coming years but is already delicious.
Fontelontano Vineyard is located between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Collemattoni at 380 meters above the sea level. The name is linked to the presence of water source where in the old times people use to get their water for their homes. The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is produced from this vineyard only in the best vintages. Fontelontano vineyard dates back to 1984 and is the oldest vineyard at Collemattoni.
96 points, Wine Spectator. "Saturated flavors of cherry and plum mesh nicely with the dense tannins in this intense, energetic red. Balanced, if a bit angular now, with the component parts needing time to integrate. Finishes with a firm grip and lingering tobacco and mineral accents. Best from 2022 through 2038. 100 cases made."
95 points, Vinous Media. "Deep ruby. Very deep aromas of red plum, red berries, sweet spices and crushed stone are complicated by mint and cinnamon on the captivating nose. Juicy and extremely intense, with a crystallized quality to its sharply delineated fruit and spice flavors, this huge, structured wine is bursting at the seams with ripe fruit and flesh. A luscious mouthful of Brunello that finishes long with polished tannins and noteworthy energy, not to mention subtle building perfume."
