2011 Palazzo Vecchio ‘Maestro’ 1.5L Magnum
Palazzo Vecchio sits atop a shallow hill in southern Tuscany, in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG . It’s surrounded by vineyards neatly bisected by five dirt roads. Today the estate is run by Maria Louisa Sbernadori on behalf of her family. Her grandfather bought the property in 1950, primarily as a shooting estate. Maria Louisa is making pure, clean expressions of Vino Nobile, wines at the same time elegant and deeply rooted in the soil. 85% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese), 10% Canaiolo Nero and 5% Mammolo, from older vines closer to the house at higher elevation. Fermented in temp-controlled stainless steel, with 24 months neutral French oak and 6 months minimum in bottle. This Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is deep ruby red in color. Aromas and flavors of dark fruits, such as cherry and blackberry, over hints of violet, tobacco, cedar and herbs present a super-classic expression of Sangiovese. Underlying beams of acidity keep the flavors lively throughout. On the palate, the wine is round and balanced, with a long, lingering finish. Mid-weight and gracious in style, it will drink nicely for another handful of years or more.
