2009 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 1.5L Magnum

2009 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 1.5L Magnum
Burgundy, France

Situated in Chassagne-Montrachet in the south of the Cote d'Or, Chateau de la Maltroye has been a family property since 1939. It is easily recognizable by its 18th century, glazed tile roof. The vineyard encompasses over 32 acres in Chassagne-Montrachet and 5 acres in Santenay. Jean-Pierre Cornut, the current wine-grower, has magnificently reinvigorated this domain which now produces some of the best Chassagne-Montrachet on the market. But a clear sign of his wine-making ability is that he is also one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s leading producer of REDS. Pinot Noir was once the dominant variety in Chassagne, but has today retreated to just the core of the most suitable terroir for the grape. His monopole Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Clos du Chateau’ is one of the village’s best reds, and one of the best quality-for-price reds in Burgundy. Ripe but cool aromas that are beautifully complex as well as attractively elegant. There is an airy character to the black cherry, earth and violet-infused nose that introduces equally pure, detailed and stony medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a linear and driving finish of outstanding length. Chassagne reds don't get much better than this
